This week we talked about Night chapter two and how Elie has losing his faith and humanity.
In Chapter 2 things begin to escalate very quickly. Elie and his family are separated from one another. Right when they get there they see the scariest thing ever. Innocent people are being put to death bybeing placed into fires. It scares me how people are just able to take ones life without even caring. The men are to go to one part of the concentration camp (Elie and his father) and the women are to go to another line (his sister and mother). As they arrive to the camp Elie and his father receive advice from a man that has been their longer then them. The man tells them to lie about there ages and say that they are eighteen and forty. I believe that the man told them that because if he said their real ages they may have been put them into the fire and would have to burn or much worse could have happened. The Nazi solders made them run naked around the camp. Then just toss them their clothes like it was absolutely nothing. Did all of the Nazi solders not care or have the least bit of kindness for the Jews? Will Elie and his father ever see the rest of their family again? I believe that they will not make it out of the concentration camp because when we were talking about it today Ms. Gunter made it seem like they were not going to make. I hope that they do.
It seems as if anything you did at these camps you were punished for. Take Elies father for example, when he asked the cabin leader a simple question he was beaten to the ground. Elie was not able to do anything to help protect his father. He had to just stay still by his bunk and watch his father so hopelessly crawl back. He says in an interview with Oprah that he still regrets not being able to help his father and stop what was happening. If he did try or at least even attempt he would have been most likely been killed. Did Elie rather put himself in danger rather then his father? What would Elie do if they had decided to kill both Elie and him from Elie attempting to save his father? Is Elie’s faith and humanity coming back?
Throughout Chapter one and two of Night we are able to see the faith and humanity grow and decrease. In the start of the book Elie is very dedicated to his faith but as we get deeper in the story he begins to lose his faith. He begins to lose faith at two parts in the story, when he figures out what is happening to him at these concentration camps. The other time is when he is the cattle wagon and yells at him. That is also another time when he loses a piece of his humanity. I believe that humanity and faith are tied together because they are similar.
