In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird the characters are strongly against the black people in the town. In the story the prejudice is Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a black man who is accused of raping a low-class white women named Mayella Ewell. This causes him and Mayella a trail in court. Everybody in the town of Maycomb is against Tom Robinson except his lawyer Atticus Finch, his children Scout and Jem, and the black folks of Maycomb.
Tom Robinson from the start was not given a fair trail. This is because he is a black man. The jury people was ruled mainly by the white folks and with barely any black folks. Some white people did believe he was an innocent man but deep down inside but were to afraid of admitting. Admitting that you do believe he was innocent of not raping Mayella can cause other people to frown upon you. Atticus and his family are examples of people at this moment being frowned upon. They are being frown upon because Atticus believes he is innocent.
Atticus was unable to bring a win for Tom Robinson and his family. This was because the white jury over powered which did not allow for him to be given the opportunity. Mayella had the Maycomb's sheriff Heck Tate and her father Bob Ewell. There facts did not line up with what the original facts. For example, Mayella says that she was hit on the right eye. This is not possible because Tom Robinson does not have a left hand. This proves that the black folks are always going to be the villain in these situation. Even though Atticus knew that he was going to be founded guilty for Tom Robinson trail he still wanted to do the right thing to help out a good man.
Atticus and the children believe that Tom Robinson is innocent man. They always believed that he was innocent but knew that he would not due to him being a black man. Tom Robinson is a good man that was proved guilty for an act he did not do. The townspeople never cared about Tom Robinson they only cared about his color. The townspeople never fully gave him a chance to prove himself a guilty.
