“The Scarlet Ibis” is a short story written by James Hurst. It is a traffic story about a child called Doodle that was serious medical condition. His older brother helps him overcome many challenges. One challenge that impacts his life is being able to walk. Sadly after being able to walk his brother, Brother expects much more from him. This causes Doodle to run into a tragic incident leading to his death. To me I believe his death was caused by a tree branch falling caused by a storm.
In this story they use many signs of Christian imagery that relates to many of the red imagery. The blood of Christ can represent the blood that Doodle had on him when he died. My favorite Christian imagery and red imagery is how Doodle can be compared to the breaking of the body and blood of Christ. Doodle did not have a simple death he had a much harder one. A tree branch crushed him. To me this is sort of like Jesus’ death. Doodle was forced by his brother to go on the run with him and Jesus’ was forced by a crowd of people to do something he did not want to do. They were both forced to do something they did not want to do, but did it convey a message. The author in this story I believed included both Christian imagery and the color imagery to add more to the storyline. For me it made me think deeper of what the author is trying to do.
We answered questions about “The Scarlet Ibis”. One of the questions that stood out to me was the question asking us “Why do you think we are nicer to strangers then we are too our own family members?” We are nicer to strangers I think because they do not know us as well and we want to make a good first impression or continue making good impressions on them. For strangers it is harder for them to forgive us. For me I do not think we intentionally try to be mean to our own family members. I think that knowing them so well we are able to act differently towards them. For me I sometimes do not always act my best towards my family because I know no matter how badly we behave our family will always love us.
“The Scarlet Ibis” is a great short story. The short story is really filled with emotions. Although it is not filled with happy emotions it still allows you feel something inside.
