“Lamb to the Slaughter” is a short story by Roald Dahl about Mary Maloney a wife that is pregnant that kills her husband for telling her some unfortunate information. She reacts to the news differently then you would expect this type of women to. In class we did a fishbowl to answer questions about the short story and had a long discussion talking about this.
Mary Maloney is a wife to a detective named Patrick Maloney. One night when her husband Patrick gets home, Patrick has unfortunate news to tell his pregnant wife. It takes him four to five seconds for him to tell her the news. We as the readers still do not full know what happens. In fishbowl and in class we discussed what happened may have happened to there relationship. In the story from inference of text I believe that he is not able to take on a child because he either cannot handle the pressure of a child. This is because of his job something bad may happen to him and not want his child to live in terror. My second thought would be that he wants a divorce from his wife because he offers to help pay for the child. " ‘And I know it's kind of a bad time to be telling you, bet there simply wasn't any other way. Of course I'll give you money and see you're looked after. But there needn't really be any fuss. I hope not anyway. It wouldn't be very good for my job.’ " As the night continues May Maloney choices to ignore what her husband says. Mary Maloney makes a comment about how she is going to cook a lamb for dinner. What Patrick does not know is what she is going to do with it. Mary Maloney choices to kill her husband with piece of frozen lamb. After she does that she goes to the butcher shop to buy some food as she is there she acts like nothing has happened. On her way back home she started talking to herself what she is going to do about this situation. “That's the way, she told herself. Do everything right and natural. Keep things absolutely natural and there'll be no need for any acting at all.” The detectives begin to arrive and ask questions while studying the body. As the night begins to end she offers the detectives some dinner, which happens to be the lamb. The detectives begin eating as she lets out soft giggle.
Mary Maloney is woman that did this crime out of passion. From doing this crime you are able to see how Mary Maloney was the lamb but by her husband destroying her future, he is slaughtering her. Mary Maloney is used to being in charge of her own life and with her husband bringing upon her with this shocking news that she is not able to control she becomes out of control by hitting him in the head with a piece of frozen lamb. Mary Maloney was so caught up in the moment she was not truly able to see what had happened.
